About Bassendean:

Bassendean, originally called West Guildford, is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia, at the north-east of the city. Bassendean is its local government area.

Also known as Bassendean Dune System, this is the name of a system of sand dunes on Swan Coastal Plain.

As settlers arrived in the Swan River Colony, land along the Swan River was quickly divided. After Guildford's founding in 1829, all of its town lots had been sold. Overlooking the river, a government reserve was determined to be an ideal site for a town, and West Guildford was incorporated. Bassendean was a name given by Colonial Secretary Peter Broun to a nearby farm he bought from the Stokes family.

Bassendean was renamed West Guildford in 1922. During the 1929 floods, the oval at the primary school was severely damaged.

A referendum was held by Bassendean Road Board in December 1934 to obtain funding for improvements of a swamp on the townsite, known as Hays Swamp. There will be a floodlit bowling green, a croquet lawn, a tennis court, and other sporting facilities included in the development.
