About Canning River:

Canning River, (Djarlgarra in Nyungar) is a major tributary of the Swan River in Western Australia's South West Land Division.

During a French exploring party in 1801 the mouth was first discovered by Europeans. A midshipman who was with the party named Charles Moreau gave the mouth the name Entrée Moreau.

Following an examination of the region in March 1827, Captain James Stirling aboard the HMS Success named the river after George Canning, who was Prime Minister of Great Britain at the time and whose government provided the funds for the expedition.

The site for Kelmscott was chosen for a new town by an exploring party led by Governor James Stirling, just five months after the Swan River Colony was founded in Western Australia.
